Not Every Good Opportunity Requires a "Yes"

Lead with wisdom. Serve with intention. Create healthy margin.

Every week brings new opportunities to serve. A ministry idea. A meeting request. A volunteer need. A family asking for help. Most of these opportunities are good. The challenge is that not every good opportunity is the right one for you to pursue.

Many pastors and ministry leaders find themselves responding to the most urgent need instead of the most important one. Calendars become crowded. Long-term planning is delayed. Prayer, shepherding, and leadership development often become the first responsibilities sacrificed to the next interruption. Over time, constant availability can quietly pull leaders away from the very calling God has given them.

Jesus modeled a different way. He served with compassion, yet He remained focused on the mission His Father had entrusted to Him. He was never driven simply by urgency. His decisions were shaped by purpose, prayer, and faithful obedience.

Healthy ministry requires that same intentionality. Before automatically saying "yes," it helps to pause and ask a few simple questions. Does this align with our mission? Is this the best use of my time? Am I the right person to lead this? Is this truly urgent, or can it wait? Those questions create space for wisdom instead of pressure to guide our decisions.

Leading well does not mean saying yes to everything. It means faithfully stewarding the time, energy, and gifts God has entrusted to you. Sometimes the right answer is yes. Sometimes it is not right now. Sometimes it is time to delegate. Sometimes the wisest answer is no.

Creating healthy margin is not about accomplishing less. It is about making room for what matters most.
